Turning 18

The Big ONE - EIGHT

Parties! Drinking! Gambling! Driving! The works!
The grand poo-bah of birthdays.

It's not all as grand as it's made out to be.

On the 16th of January...

I went to work.

Yup, I went to work in the morning. Unbelievable as it may seem, but that's what I did. One girl turned 18 a week before me, and she took a whole week off, along with a trip to Melbourne sponsered by her parents.

I didn't get amazing and grand presents. [I'm wondering whether my parents have secretly joined a Jehovah's Witness group] I did get some nice stuff from my aunt though. And a great many thanks to the people to sent me birthday wishes, either via Facebook, or via sms. =)
My work friends were great though, they got me pressies. :P I have cool colleagues.

But you know what...I think I'll just hang around for my 21st birthday before I throw the grand celebration.

After all, what can possibly be done at the age of 18? I could drink. If I'd started getting my Ls earlier, I would've been able to drive.
But I don't have my keys out into the world yet. No place to call my own. No car. Not even my licence.

Okay, so the licence bit is kind of my fault. But still.

And if anyone wants to buy me a car, it'd be greatly appreciated. :P

I'm in no rush to grow up...even though I probably should be.

Besides...hopefully by the time I hit 21, everyone will have saved more money and will have no excuse to not getg me bigger, better and grander presents. :P

The 18th year is celebrated by all and many, far and wide. In the Philippines, the 18th birthday is a huge thing to celebrate, possibly due to all the American influence. It's strange, because I never really knew where I would end up celebrating my 18th birthday. And now I've ended up here. In a place where I watch paint dry for fun. In a place where I know I'll never settle.
Ridiculous isn't it. The supposedly best birthday of my life, and this is where I am.

Still, it then makes more sense to wait till my 21st so I can go somewhere else before I hit 21 and celebrate it in the place of my choice.

I finally found someone who shares the same birthdate with me- Joe Kor, my cousin-in-law. Happy birthday. =)

March Birthdays

There were so many in this month, I thought I'd just end up having a blog post to do it.

March 5th- Happy Birthday Lindiwe Khulu! I hope it was an amazing day. Take care, stay in school, safe sex. No more drinking any Storms. XD Do your homework. =)

March 16th- Happy Birthday Thandeka Jwaha! Have fun my doll, and enjoy matric. It's gonna be one crazy ride, so enjoy it as it comes!

March 19th- Happy Birthday to my cousins, Nick, Andrew and Mark in that order. Nick came out at 8.00am, Andrew at 8.01am and Mark at 8.02am. So if my cousins ever deign to come online and actually check out my blog [in 5 years time maybe...], Happy Birthday. =)

March 20th- Happy Birthday to Jon Ti, in Malaysia; and Tanya Goromonzi and Steph Dabrowski in South Africa! Jon and Tanya, you're finally legal! To Stephy, it's just one more year to being 18, so savour ever moment (or pray that it goes faster!) Impending hug to my boets. =D

March 22nd- Happy Birthday to Chris Teh my fuzzy little 'half brother'. =P Stay safe, party hard, and I can't wait to go back to KL and hang out wth you again.

Happy Birthday all. Don't party too hard. =)

Selamat Hari Jadi!

Today, I've just turned into the ripe old age of 17. =)

Not that I'm all that excited, I passed most of the day by sitting on my arse and letting it get nice and warm. XD

In the words of the great House in the series House M.D.: "Man, I didn't think that the planet would make it round the sun this year, but...*sigh* if it just wasn't the 'Planet-That-Could'..."

Most people celebrate their birthdays to celebrate another year alive. I'm not too sure what I celebrate it for seeing as I don't really think about death all the time and think 'wow, this just could've been my last year'.
Apparently, people used to have large gatherings of friends and family during their birthdays because they believed that evil spirits of young children who did not get to live to see their first birthdays would come back and revenge their bad luck on these lucky souls. I reckon if that was the case, they'd be hunted down every minute of their life. XD But that's not for me to dispute after years of superstition.

Y'know, my resolutions from the New Year have changed so much as to receive a new type up altogether. =)
So they'll be let public here:

1. To get 75% and over in all my subjects this year for matric. [go figure me, I've already lowered my standards. XD]
2. To earn enough money to fly back to Malaysia via the cheapest airline I can find
3. To gain entrance into either UWA or ANU for university.

So yup, thus are my resolutions. =)

The lights dimmed slightly, giving the place a slightly eery shadow. Peering in the deep black abyss, she saw her life's work before her, rolling down like credits after a TV show. Final and ending each day. She opened her mouth, took a large breath to calm herself. She could do this. She raised her chin: Thank you for being on the Michelle Watch with us, I'm Michelle Wong, goodnight.

A New Month of the New Year [and so the birthdays begin...]

January has come and a New Year begins. =)

January happens to be the month in which Anzac Day occurs, a tribute to the Australian soldiers who fought against the Japanese soldiers and endured months of toture before finally being part of the luck few to make it back to Australia. Anzac Day occurs on January the 26th, and hopefully I will not be prevailed upon to celebrate it. =)

January also welcomes the Three Kings Day. This day is celebrated on the 6th of January, the last day of Christmas and is supposed to be the day that the Three Wise Men came to visit Jesus after his birth. This is the first time I have ever heard of such a celebration, and so I am quite interested in it's customs. =D Little children apparently leave their shoes at the door filled with hay to attract the camels that the Wise Men rode on and the next morning, it would be filled with toys and gifts. This also seems to have been where the traditions of Christmas presents first started.

January also pays tribute to several birthdays this month:
3rd- Yan Ruizhe
6th- Audrey Chew
13th- Robin Harper
16th- Me!
20th- Lubumba Kamukwamba and Patrick Quah
28th- Elaine Nevis, Gregory Yap and Dan Mosanu

So Happy Birthday to us all, may we be turning 17 or 18, and here's to a whole year or successes, dreams and amazing memories. =) And also finally being legal for some of us. XD
